Mixed-use Development, Liquor Licenses, Parking on ANC-3E Agenda

Discussion of a planned mixed-use development at the Tenleytown Safeway site tops the agenda for the October 10 Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 3E meeting.  Previous discussions on the Safeway project have been spirited, to say the very least, as developers, residents and commissioners have sought to find some kind of middle ground on issues of height, density and traffic mitigation. Neighbors of the property have valid concerns about its impact, but hopefully a final agreement can be reached on this long overdue project.  The Safeway is in dire need of redevelopment, and the section of the Wisconsin Avenue corridor on which it sits could definitely benefit from the revitalization a mixed-use development would bring.  And some improved streetscaping wouldn’t hurt either. For some history on the development project, read selected articles here, here, here and here, as well as this site’s review of the Safeway store. Don’t forget to read the comments, too, for a hint of the debate – and its tone – around this project.

Another potentially hot agenda item could be discussion of the renewal of the Civil Cigar Lounge‘s liquor license given the contentious relationship between Civil and members of the surrounding community. Neighbors have had a series of complaints about odors and noise emanating from the lounge. See this recap of the August ANC-3E meeting for how things went the last time there was a Civil agenda item.  Chad’s liquor license renewal is also up for discussion.

Finally, parking and the Residential Parking Permit program – always crowd pleasing issues for debate in this community – round out the agenda, along with discussion of proposed revisions to the District’s zoning code. Never a commission to shy away from a packed agenda, the October ANC-3E meeting looks to have a lot of hefty issues right up to the closing gavel.

The meeting will be held next Thursday, October 10 at 7:30 p.m. in Tenleytown Room I of the Embassy Suites at the Chevy Chase Pavilion.
