UPDATE: Safeway Development Off ANC-3E Agenda; Bike Lanes, Tenley WinterFest Added
Discussion of a planned mixed-use development at the Tenleytown Safeway has been pulled from the October 10 Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 3E agenda. A delay in the preparation of a Planned Unit Development (PUD) application led to the revision. According to ANC-3E Chairman Jon Bender, Safeway now anticipates filing an application in November or December. The ANC will take up the matter in advance of the filing, most likely next month.
Discussion of the Residential Parking Permit program is also off the agenda. Instead commissioners will debate a resolution on the New Mexico Avenue bike path. ANC-3D, in which the proposed bike lines are located, took up the issue at its October 2 meeting. Reversing earlier support, the commission voted to delay the installation of the bike path, asking for a traffic study by the District Department of Transportation (DDOT). Given strong support within the Tenleytown ANC for bikeways and other means to increase bike ridership, a statement in support of the New Mexico Avenue path, which falls outside ANC-3E boundaries, could reasonably be expected.
Also added to the agenda is discussion of a grant application to support Tenley WinterFest. The event, which began nine years ago as a craft fair to support Janney Elementary School, expanded last year to become a neighborhood holiday festival, including: a community scavenger hunt; crafts, food and musical performances at Janney Elementary; an art sale at Iona Senior Services: and a book sale and special events at the Tenley-Friendship Library. This year, WinterFest organizers hope to expand further, adding events and partnerships with local merchants and organizations.
