Tenleytown Resident Named a 2013 Washingtonian of the Year

Each year, Washingtonian magazine recognizes “local heroes who help make the Washington area a better place to live.” For 2013, Tenleytown neighbor Richard “Benny” Bienvenue was acknowledged by the magazine for his two decades of service at the helm of Our House. He was among 12 DC metro area leaders receiving the magazine’s accolade.

Our House is a residential job training facility for at-risk young men, providing them with education, a skilled trade and work experience, including in the fields of construction, organic gardening, bee keeping, and small engine repair.  The program seeks to “teach carpentry skills, workforce readiness, and GED preparation to abandoned, abused, homeless, and orphaned teenage boys.”  Currently able to accommodate 16 young men, the program intends to expand to include 24 residents and is raising funds to complete a new dormitory.

For more on the program, visit the website and read the fall 2013 newsletter. Also check out page 56 of the January 2014 issue of Washingtonian.

Thanks to a Tenleytown resident for calling our attention to the good work and well-deserved recognition of Bienvenue.
