Package Thieves Target Holiday Deliveries
Brown cardboard packages delivered to front stoops have become a sign of the holiday season, as people shop online or send gifts to loved ones across the country. Unfortunately, thieves are looking to snap up those boxes before their rightful owners can bring them inside.
In a email Monday evening, Commander Michael Reese of the Metropolitan Police Department notified residents of the Second District that there has been an uptick in package thefts in our area. Police are working to apprehend the perpetrators, many of whom are repeat offenders.
“Arrests have been made with the assistance of residences and covert police operations,” wrote Commander Reese.
To help police combat thefts, Commander Reese advised residents to avoid having packages dropped off when they are not at home and to coordinate with neighbors to receive and sign for packages. “Prevention will go a long way to help resolve this issue.”
He also asked residents to call 9-1-1 if they observe any suspicious activity, writing that this “include[s] all door to door solicitors.”
