How does your garden grow? With the hands of many neighbors, in the case of Janney Elementary School. While our neighborhood school has wonderful outdoor spaces, pre-kindergarten students currently do not have a natural learning space. Janney and Serve DC plan to give them one this weekend with your help.

On Saturday, May 30, join Serve DC from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. to build a community garden for Janney’s youngest students. Volunteers are needed to help build six raised garden beds, move soil and mulch, install compost towers, and prime two plastic storage trunks, which the kids will paint as part of a class project on Monday.

Serve DC will have many tools and supplies on hand, but volunteers who would like to bring their own are encouraged to do so. The project will utilize shovels, heavy rakes, wheelbarrows, work gloves, electric drills with screwdriver bits, and outdoor extension cords. Saturday is expected to be another warm spring day, so remember to bring a water bottle and wear sunscreen.

Volunteers should meet in the Janney garden. For more information or to sign up to help build the garden, contact Alexandra Zeitz-Moskin by email at [email protected].
