Congratulations to Alice Deal Middle School students Britney Rivera, Jennifer Villeda, and Zoe Walls who cooked up a winning dish on Saturday to become Chopped Champions. The three members of the Deal Cooking Club took part in the 3rd Annual Chopped Championship sponsored by Whole Foods Market in Tenleytown.

After a year of preparation, including monthly cooking classes led by Whole Foods Healthy Eating Specialist Allison Godfrey, 10 finalists competed in three teams to claim the ultimate cooking title. Each team faced the challenge of incorporating three secret ingredients – crimini mushrooms, balsamic vinegar, and Parmesan cheese – into their dishes.

While all three teams prepared delicious meals for the judges, Rivera, Villeda, and Walls worked together to create a dish with bright, clean flavors that balanced spice and acidity quite well and showcased the secret ingredients. Their breaded chicken was seasoned with grated Parmesan and cayenne and black pepper, along with a secret blend of herbs, giving it a nice kick. The angel hair pasta was lightly tossed with olive oil, fresh oregano, fresh ground black pepper, and crimini mushrooms sauteed in balsamic vinegar. The judges had a hard time putting down their forks when it came to tasting this dish.

And now you can sample the winning dish for yourself. Whole Foods will be selling the herb breaded chicken and pasta in the prepared foods section throughout June.
